Pheabian Olaoluwa Akinwale

Olaoluwa Pheabian Akinwale, a Professor of Parasitology is the immediate past Deputy Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, and the Institute’s Director of Neglected Tropical Disease Research. Professor Akinwale is also the Principal Investigator and head of the Institute’s Molecular Parasitology Research Laboratory (a member of the Skin NTD-Laboratory Network in the World Health Organization African Region). Professor Akinwale has been a Guest Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom, and a Visiting Professor at the following universities: Taipei Medical University, Taiwan; University of Debrecen, Hungary; and Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia, and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Parasitology at the Lead City University, Nigeria. Professor Akinwale has over three decades of research, administrative, teaching and mentoring experience. She has taught and supervised several undergraduates and post-graduate students and has served as an external                              examiner/evaluator for many universities within and outside Nigeria. She has co-supervised three MSc and thirteen PhD students, many of whom have become professors. She has secured fully funded international PhD scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships for some early career researchers, in addition to providing hands-on training in molecular and parasitological techniques for over 300 undergraduates. She is an expert reviewer for many international research funding organisations, and an editorial board       member/peer reviewer for several national and international scientific journals. Professor Akinwale has been a member/chair of many national and international committees that made policy and strategic recommendations for several organisations including her Institute. She is a founding member of the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARNTD), and the TDR Global Research Mentorship Working Group that developed an Institutional Research Mentorship Guideline for low- and middle-income countries. Professor Akinwale currently serves as a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Grand Challenges Nigeria (GCNg) Project, and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), United Kingdom, and is also a member of the World Health Organization Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (WHO STAG-NTD), Geneva, Switzerland. She is a member of the College of Experts of the La Caixa Foundation, Spain, and the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF), United Kingdom. She successfully hosted the recently held first West African Regional meeting of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) in Nigeria. Professor Akinwale belongs to several national and international scientific societies and organizations and is an acknowledged fellow of the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria (PPSN). Professor Olaoluwa Pheabian Akinwale is married to Air Commodore (Dr) Edward Abayomi Akinwale (retired) and the union is blessed with three children.
